CHOLULA

1 logo va viajes blanco nuevo.png

One of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Mesoamerica, Cholula was an important ceremonial, religious and commercial centre of the Central Highlands. Its historical significance is embodied in the Great Pyramid of Cholula (Tlachihualtépetl), the pyramid with the largest base in the world, built through successive construction stages over several centuries.

Rising above this pre-Hispanic platform is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, creating a unique cultural landscape where Indigenous heritage and the colonial period coexist. This convergence of eras defines Cholula’s identity: a place where the past did not disappear, but was transformed.

The name Cholula, from the Nahuatl Chōlōllān, means “place of refuge” or “place of flight”, reflecting its historical role as a city that welcomed diverse peoples and traditions. Today, Cholula preserves ancestral neighbourhoods, living festivities and an urban layout that dialogues with its archaeological remains.

Framed by the presence of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, Cholula is a destination where archaeology, landscape and contemporary life intertwine, offering a deep and authentic cultural experience.
