TLAYACAPAN

The El Tlatoani Archaeological Site in the municipality of Tlayacapan, Morelos, is located on a hill, and most of the upper surface is terraced. These terraces were formed by constructing earthen retaining shells to counter the natural slope of the hill and thus create horizontal spaces that were useful for permanent habitation of the site. In the spaces we have explored on these terraces, we have found that the most significant occupation of these areas took place during the Toltec period, between 900 and 1200 AD, a period archaeologists call the Early Postclassic.

Among its tourist attractions are the 16th-century Augustinian Convent of San Juan Bautista, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the La Cerería Cultural Center; its 18 chapels; its clay crafts; and the musical scene, La Banda de Tlayacapan, considered one of the oldest in the country. It is also the birthplace of the Chinelo, as it is believed that the famous chinelo jump was born here in the 19th century.
