CANTONA and Tehuacán

This ancient metropolis is located on a badlands (a lava field with a rugged and arid surface), but its population adapted it into housing units surrounded by peripheral walls. We know of at least 2,700 in the southern part, the most studied, and it is estimated that at its peak, it had around 7,500 housing units where just over 90,000 people resided. The presence of 27 or more ball courts gave it unusual importance. It reached its greatest cultural peak between 350 BC and 550 AD. After 600 AD, its population grew significantly, and during that time, until 900 AD, it was the largest and most important city in the Central Highlands.
